What is a quality education?

A quality education is a universal human right and the fourth United Nations Sustainable Development Goal. It is defined as an education that provides learners with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in society, promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and prepares them for the workforce.

Unfortunately, around the world, there are still significant gaps in access to quality education. In 2020, around 258 million children and youth were out of school, and nearly 60% of primary school-aged children in sub-Saharan Africa were not in school.

​

Access to quality education is essential because it not only provides individuals with the necessary skills for the workforce but also helps to promote gender equality and reduce poverty. Education is a critical tool for empowering individuals, improving health outcomes, and promoting social development.

To address this issue, the UN has set several targets, including ensuring that all children have access to free primary and secondary education and increasing the number of qualified teachers worldwide.

To achieve these targets, there are several proposed solutions, such as increasing investment in education, providing teacher training, and creating inclusive learning environments. Furthermore, providing access to education in conflict and emergency situations is crucial to ensure that vulnerable populations can still receive an education.

Individuals can also play a role in promoting access to quality education by advocating for policies that promote access to education for all, volunteering in education programs, or donating to organizations that work towards increasing access to quality education worldwide.
